It’s the end of an era…I just cancelled my Tivo service. I’ve been rockin’ tivo since late ‘99 — I remember tellin’ cats everywhere I had learned how to watch TV smarter, and it’s the same line I slid my skeptical wife when trying to sell her on the service.
Seven years and two Tivos later (the second model was DVDR/DVDRW — let that marinate) we’ve had to press on. No longer do we need to get down with a unit that learns our viewing habits, we know what we like and where to find it. We’ve mastered the art of watching TV without surfing TV and the new Comcast DVR supplements our viewing hustle accordingly.
TRUTH? Eyes on the prize with this Comcast Tivo DVR tag-team unit that will hopefully drop soon. Until then I’ll be watching…

While Clarence might have evolved, I have not fully embraced Comcast DVR. I want my DVDR back! Why are Tivo drives so moody?
Interesting move dude. Curious why. Is it the “learning” thing that bugged you?
I’ve got the Comcast DVR and love it. Sure, the UI could be a ton better and some of the features need improving, but for what I need it for, it does the trick.
C.C., I’ll admit at some point that annoyance started to creep in related to the learning/suggestion features. At some point, it became more work managing that than actually getting down with the mind-numbing joys of TV. Also, the hardware problems with the drive being corrupted over time started to wear on me as well. I could replace the drive, however, it’s more of a technical hassle than is necessary at this point. I will miss the DVDR/RW features though. The pricepoint for this joint 3 years ago was 1200. I’m not down to invest in a new Series 3, since I believe Comcast will come correct in the next year or two with an official Tivo UI.
Wife, you’ll come around eventually. You always do :)
Though i too love the the Comcast DVR the motorola dual tunner box is a piece. Everytime i have any problem and have to wait the 20 mins on Comcast hold after being transfered to the Albuquerque office their solution inevitably leads me to unplugging the unit and waiting 45 minutes for it to re-download the current tv schedule. Oh and the remote will freeze up too - another wonderful feature. I’m off to watch recorded racing now!
Interesting.
I’m still in-love with the Media Center software on my computers. I can record shows like TiVo and I can burn’em to discs like DVR set-ups.
It doesn’t “learn” what I like, but that’s fine with me. Also, no monthly fee for the service.
Now, if only I didn’t hate Comcast’s customer service (or lack thereof) so doggone much. We dropped Comcast a loooong time, ago.
thanks for the info sucka. i already paid for the lifetime on my series two several years ago. can’t undo that. i admit my TV watching is WAY down now and the sources are diverse
about a 60/40 split between TiVo recordings and iTunes/Bittorrent
i even cancelled all premium cable channels when I realized i only watched two or three shows.
Whether TiVo or Comcast, etc, I want my DVR to share it’s data on me WITH me. Not so much with automated references, but just tell me
- how many hours of TV i’ve watched
- the most popular shows and channels
- WHEN i watch TV
- recording vs. watching live
They have all that data and are mining it to monetize me, but it’s MY DATA. Fork it over. It might just reveal I don’t need a DVR after all.
