I’m not a real politcal type person by any stretch of the imagination. I have some views on right and wrong. I can sniff out a negative political hustle if necessary and I know when to issue a C’MON BRUH! when I hear some mess that doesn’t make sense.
During the Katrina hurricane, though, one thing that did make sense to me was this whole notion that George W. Bush, doesn’t care about Black people. It was Kanye West who laid it down proper about our nations president (based on Bush’s slow response to Katrina during a live telethon on NBC).
A few months ago I came across the KanyeWasRight.org website that aims to promote awareness about the goings on in the aftermath of Katrina and to raise some financial support for those who got played out by the slack efforts of George W. Bush. The site is sponsored by Color of Change and one of the promotional hustles for the site is a t-shirt lettin’ the world know just how you get down. I copped one immediately in Black.
It’s easy to fashion your mentals around an image of a big Black bama rockin’ the all Black t-shirt with bold white letters proclaiming Kanye Was Right; i’m a people watching type personality and am more than amused by the double and triple stares I get as people catch what is blazed across my chest.
I haven’t had any verbal challenges to my silent support on the whole format, but, it would be interesting to see how some cats could try and change my mind. Personally I’m still caught up on how the mass media depicted Black people as looters and rapists during Katrina; even more off the hook is the fact that people setup websites that advertised, “white rooms only“. I’ve digressed.
TRUTH? Bush doesn’t care about Black people. The bigger question is does this cat care about anybody? I’m hard pressed to posit that he does. As far as i’m concerned, a lot of people in the 9th ward (and more) got turned out like $2 tricks on a Saturday night because there was no profit for the Bush regime. In the end, Black or white, Kanye IS right.

“Bush doesn’t care about Black people.” wrong.
Condi and Powell: America’s face to the world. 3rd most powerful person in the world behind the President and Vice President. Who else had blacks so high in the government? Answer, nobody.
Point 2: Kanye is full of crap. My personal opinion is that most of New Orleans was black. So of course they are going to be seen stealing, they are a majority of the population. (and perhaps not as willing to leave before the storm, but that is just a theory, I have no evidence) Just like, why has every president so far been white, because there are more of them. (Powell could be president if he ran, I would support him)
There you go BshdoBrwn :-) Have a field day.
(I think it is interesting that Jeremy does not dispute the assertion that George Bush does not care about people.)
A president who watches his own personal wealth grow–perhaps exponentially, I cannot recall the percentage now–while the majority of Americans experience a drop in their real wages does not care about people. He cares about money. I agree with Bushido Brown: George Bush does not care about people.
As for the media…the question is not the proportion of Black people living in New Orleans or staying in New Orleans. The question is: how did the media portray survivors of Katrina? Photos of White surivivors carried headlines about them “finding” food. Photos of Black survivors carried headlines about them”looting, stealing, robbing.”
Um, did most people in the 9th Ward even *own* a car so that they could leave? Let’s not forget that African Americans were shot at when they tried to escape the flood by crossing a bridge into almost all-white Gretna Green.
Jeremy points out the presidency has been all-white because America (and in turn New Orleans) is majority white, and then says that blacks were more on television looting because there are more African Americans? Come on, now! I don’t have the percentages, but there are *millions of poor whites* not filmed and broadcast looting.
